Center for Extended Studies
The mission of the Center for Extended Studies is to successfully plan, develop, market, and deliver programs of lifelong learning. This includes collaborating with academic departments, the university faculties, administrative offices, business agency entities, and support units of the university to design, promote, and administer innovative programs that respond to community needs.
CES provides opportunities for professional/personal development, certification training, and adult education. These programs are designed to meet the needs of the Huntsville/Madison County workforce and the lifelong aspirations of citizens in the larger society. CES has no specific admission requirements, but there are nominal fees related to each course or program. Although there is no college credit earned, participants can receive certificates and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
CES serves as the clearinghouse for non-traditional credit. The non-traditional credit awards may vary by discipline, but generally encompass:
- Credit to adults who possess six years of work-related learning (earned within the last ten years) embracing the intended field of study.
- Credit for courses completed through College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Defense
Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Proficiency Examination Programs
(PEP), military programs, and the American Council on Education (ACE).
Continuing Education Unit (CEU)
The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized unit of measurement for participation in non-credit continuing education programs. Adults who successfully complete CES-approved programs will be awarded continuing education units. CES manages the review of programs to determine if they qualify for CEUs. To make these determinations, CES uses International Association for Continuing Education And Training (IACET) guidelines and criteria for awarding CEUs. Please note that Continuing Education Credit approval is at the discretion of your licensing board. Contact your licensing board or agency for specific information relating to your profession.
