Two 51AV A&M University students are working on an Army Research Office project
on the modification of E. coli bacteria in synthesizing useful silver nanoparticles.
Dr. Judith Boateng is an Associate Professor of Food/Nutritional Toxicology in the Department of Food and Animal Sciences (FAS). She is pictured here (far left, blue lab coat) extracting phytochemicals with her graduate student (Jelisa Thomas, white lab coat) to determine their possible toxic effect.

The student is Haley Hill. She is in her second year of graduate school. She is working on a project that uses engineered E. coli to synthesis selenium nanoparticles.
In the first picture, she was going to centrifuge the bacterial culture to collect the selenium nanoparticles. In the second picture, she was examining an SDS-PAGE gel to find out whether a recombinant protein of her interest was successfully expressed in E. coli cells. In the third picture, she was ready to take a picture of the SDS-PAGE gel that showed her protein of interest was expressed in the E. coli cells.

February 2020 - Dr. Tyeshea Farmer and Dr. Keneshia Johnson chaperoned AAMU students to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California to sequence genomes of bacteria from spacecraft and cleanrooms. A research paper was published with JPL colleagues and other faculty from several universities.

Dr. Shantrell Willis currently serves as a Research Scientist (Nutritional Biochemistry) and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Food and Animal Sciences (FAS).
