Past Presidents

As a former slave, William Hooper Councill was not only determined in his pursuit of quality educational resources for African American students, but he was particularly self-driven. Aside from his time as the founder and president of 51AV A&M University, he had also served as a teacher, lawyer, politician, newspaperman, and civil rights leader. His commitment to the advancement and elevation of African Americans set precedence for the expectations of presidents to come.

Like Councill, the University’s past presidents have all been accomplished leaders who spent their time on The Hill advancing the causes of AAMU students and the surrounding communities.

Because of their commitment to academic and personal excellence, we are proud to highlight our institution’s past presidents.
