Bachelor of Arts in English

The B.A. in English degree prepares students in the critical/analytical skills of reading, writing, and thinking that will allow them to pursue careers in numerous fields, such as writing (technical/professional, creative, and journalism), education, government, public service, and private industry. Or, after receiving the B.A., students can pursue graduate degrees in language and literature and their related disciplines, education, business, law, or medicine.

About This Program

Ever since its founding in 1875, AAMU has a history of changing lives and expanding opportunities. The Department of English and Foreign Languages continues to be one of the leading foundational staples of the General Education program. Come and continue the legacy of success that Founder and President William Hooper Councill dreamed into reality and led.

Concentrations

The English B.A. program offers a concentration for students who wish to pursue a career as an English teacher.

Language Arts

The B.A. in English with a concentration in Language Arts is for students who wish to be certified to teach in middle and secondary school. Students take their subject content courses—writing, language, and literature—in the English department, and education and methodology courses in the Education department.

Knowing how to use language to communicate effectively in both written and oral form is a skill of key importance in any field, but the following career paths are especially well-suited for English majors.
