Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

In our Sociology program, our students are introduced to a sociological perspective. Our students engage in analytical discussions and studies of various social groups. Students will have opportunities to participate in internships or study-abroad programs related to sociological work. Students will also have opportunities to participate in internships through the Experiential Learning Opportunities office, where they will get hands-on experience.

Departmental and Assessment Requirements

A major or minor in the department follows the scholarship requirements of the University. The student is expected to complete the Core Curriculum Program and satisfy the requirements of the college of Business and Public Affairs. Students who intend to teach in public school systems will follow the program of the School of Education. All Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Sociology majors must complete a minor. A grade of “C” or above must be earned in each major and minor course.

Reading Across the Campus and Community (RACC)

This is a program sponsored by the department since 2003 to encourage students, faculty, and the community to read, discuss, and share ideas on historical events and developments as documented by writers and scholars and their implications for contemporary society. The objectives of RACC are:

  • To encourage reading among students, faculty, and the community
  • To develop reading and comprehension skills
  • To prepare students to become lifelong independent learners
  • To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas across disciplines
