Dr. Deden Rukmana
Deden Rukmana is a professor and the chairperson of the Department of Community and Regional Planning at 51AV A&M University. He received a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University and completed master's degrees from the University of Southern California and Bandung Institute of Technology. Prior to joining 51AV A&M University, he taught at Savannah State University for twelve years and worked as a planning analyst with the Florida Department of Community Affairs. He also has eight years of experience as an urban planner in Indonesia.
His research centers on homelessness, health disparities in the U.S., and urbanization, housing, transportation and development challenges in Indonesian cities, particularly Jakarta. His work appears in journals such as Cities, Environment and Urbanization ASIA, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Planning Theory and Practice, Housing Policy Debate, Planning Practice and Research and International Planning Studies.

Rukmana is the editor of (2020) and a co-editor of (2022) with Sonia Roitman of the University of Queensland. He is also the author of Residential Origins of the Homeless: Spatial Distribution Analysis and Implications to Homelessness Prevention Interventions (2008) published by VDM Verlag. Rukmana also co-edited two books in Bahasa Indonesia: Kontribusi Ilmuan Diaspora dalam Pengembangan Sumber Daya Iptek dan Dikti di Indonesia (Contributions of Diaspora Academics in Enhancing Resources of Science and Technology and Higher Education in Indonesia) with Alan Koropitan (2018) published by Kemenristekdikti and Bunga Rampai Pemikiran Akademisi Indonesia di Amerika Serikat (Anthology of Ideas from Indonesian Academicians in the U.S). with Ismunandar (2016) published by Andi Publisher.
Rukmana’s research has been supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Many media have cited his works, including , AFP, Public Radio International, Straits Times (Singapore), Jakarta Post and Kompas (Indonesia), Diplomat (Australia), El Pais (Mexico), and Nikkei Asian Review (Japan).
Rukmana currently serves as the Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN) secretary from 2022-2024. Rukmana has been active in various academic organizations, particularly the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), the American Planning Association, the Urban Affairs Association, and the International Indonesian Scholars Association.
Rukmana had also served as a Co-Chair of the Global Planning Educators Interest Group of ACSP (2015-2017), an elected member of the Governing Board of the ACSP (2013-2015), a Director at Large of the Georgia Planning Association (2015-2018), and the Chairperson of the International Indonesian Scholars Association (2018–2020).
