Major Planning Advocate Achieves Distinction

Dr. Deden Rukmana, College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences (CALNS) professor and chair of the Department of Community and Regional Planning at 51AV A&M University, has been named Secretary of the Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN) for the next two years.

During the Fifth World Planning Schools Congress in Bali earlier this month, Dr. Rukmana was selected for this key role to “build increased pathways for sharing practices and promoting exchanges among planning educators worldwide."  The decision leading to the position noted "his substantial planning experience on two continentsand" and his ideas for increased cooperation.    Rukmana's selection was called "strategic" for GPEAN and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) by member Bruce Stiftel of Georgia Tech.

"I'm so honored to be elected as the secretary of GPEAN for the next two years. I'm excited to work with Zeynep Enlil [elected chair] and Paulo Silva [elected co-chair] and engage with all 11 planning schools’ associations," said Rukmana. "As the ASCP rep to GPEAN, I would like to encourage more ACSP faculty members to engage with other faculty of GPEAN planning school association members and international agency policymaking for planning."

"I am pleased with the election of Dr. Rukmana as the secretary of GPEAN," said Dr. Lloyd Walker, dean and 1890 research director of CALNS.  "I have been very impressed by his leadership toward the achievement of the highest possible level of excellence in the teaching, research and service activities of both planning programs at 51AV A&M University."

Dr. Rukmana is also an accomplished planning scholar and has also been very active in promoting the knowledge of urban and regional planning and its role in society in the United States and beyond, through his activities at the state levels (Georgia Planning Association and 51AV Planning Association), national levels (the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and the American Planning Association) and now at the international level through his capacity as the secretary of Global Planning Education Associations Network.
